PSHE

PSHE including SMSC and RSE

PSHE at HFJS enables our children to become healthy, independent, and respectful members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social, and cultural issues that are part of growing up in modern Britain. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and to appreciate what it means to be a responsible member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to become curious, creative, and confident learners who develop their sense of self-worth by interacting and building healthy relationships in the school and wider community. 

To develop our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural education we will teach lessons based each term around a topic. Each session will enable the children to explore, investigate and philosophise about themes that affect us all. The topics for this year will be Being Me in My World, Dreams and Goals, Celebrating Differences, Relationships, Healthy Me and Changing Me.

Being Me in My World allows the children to spend time valuing themselves and their achievements. It encourages them to look at how they fit in to the school community and gives them the opportunity to explore and appreciate the positive school community that they belong to.

Dreams and Goals gives the children the chance to explore the dreams and goals of people from all walks of life, from people with disabilities to people who have become well known for achieving their own personal dreams. Alongside this the children start to recognise their own dreams and goals for both now and the future.

Celebrating Difference will explore the culturally diverse country and world that we live. It will allow the children to recognise their own identities and help them to celebrate not only their similarities to others but also the differences that make us who we are.

Healthy Me will allow the children to learn about creating and maintaining healthy bodies and healthy minds. The children will take part in work on healthy eating, keeping safe, wellbeing and mindfulness.

Our Relationships topic will explore the different relationships we have with different people; family, friends and peers. We will work on developing healthy relationships and friendships in other both in school and the wider community. This will also include some work on keeping safe in cyber space.

Changing Me is our Relationships and Sex topic. Here the children will learn about themselves, the differences between boys and girls, the physical and emotional changes they will experience as they grow into adults and how and why babies are made. Our aims for RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is to provide children with age appropriate information; to allow them to explore attitudes and values and to empower them to make positive decisions about their lives as they continue through school and into their future lives.

In Years 3 and 6, the children will also take part in Philosophy for Children. During these sessions the children will explore moral dilemmas, discuss topical issues and debate preconceived perceptions they may have of the world.

Mindfulness is also rolled out through the school. All staff have also been invited to take part in mindfulness training. Mindfulness is a thought process that allows us to pay attention to, and see clearly what is happening in our lives. Whilst it cannot eliminate life’s pressures, it can be a good way to help adults and children deal with them in a calmer manner that is beneficial to overall well-being. As the children and staff begin to practice things in a mindful way it is hoped that they will feel calmer and more relaxed, and will have a greater concept of their surroundings and feelings.
