Star Gazers - Curriculum Enrichment


This term, the children are learning about the Earth, the Sun and the Moon. Last week, we looked at what we thought we already knew about these celestial bodies. Then we created each in proportion (the best we could) to show the relative dimensions. I think we were surprised at how big the Sun really was.

I have been asked the same questions by several parents, so I thought it would be useful to clarify them on here.


Spellings this year are practiced in class. The children are given ten spellings to learn and then implement into their writing the following week. The expectation is that they bring them home to share with parents, but there is no spelling test at school the following week.


MyMaths is now set up and the children have been given their logins. There will be an activity set (normally Thursday) to be completed the following Friday - so the children have eight days to do this. If your child cannot access MyMaths at home, they can access it at school during playtime and lunch, but they must ask an adult before they do this.

Singapore Bar Method

Through our new approach to maths - Maths, No Problem - the children are being introduced to the Singapore bar method. This is a visual aid that helps the children solve complicated word problems, once they have embedded it. Parents are asking if they can access a website to help their children at home. As it stands, we do not have access to such site, but should that change, then you will be informed. In the meantime, if you Google Singapore bar method, then their are a plethora of help videos you can access.


The children are expected to read to an adult five nights a week for five minutes. Please sign the reading log so that your child gets a stamp the following day.

We are putting a lot of time at school into hearing children read. This is a focus area for us this year. It is really important that children understand this importance and want to read. They wont buy into this if their role models, parents and family, do not take time out to listen to them and improve this key skill. I thank you in advance for doing this for your child.

Curriculum Enrichment/Higham Explorer

Your child will be given a choice of activities they can do at home for the Curriculum Enrichment we are studying. This will be for Terms 1, 3 and 5. We would like the children to choose two and complete them before the end of the term they have been set in. In terms 2,4 and 6, Higham Explorer homework will be set, and will follow a similar pattern to last year. Again a choice of activity for your child to choose.


I hope this helps clear up the work we are asking the children to complete at home. If I have forgotten anything, then please touch base with me.

A big welcome to all of the children and parents to who are in my class this year. My name is Mr Russell and I am one of the Year 5 team this year, in addition to being the Year 5 leader. In our class this year, the children will also be taught by Mrs Sharkey, Miss Farrow and Miss Gregory-Thomas, respectively. Support this year will be given by Mrs Vega and - a new addition to the school - Mrs Denny, who I know you will all make feel welcome.

Whilst it is still only the first week, we have been really impressed with how well all of the children have settled. It is fantastic to be given the opportunity to work with the children and I am looking forward to lots of great teaching and learning. This will be complimented by our new approach to the curriculum. In Maths, we will be using an innovative model know as the Singapore Bar Method. In our English we will continue with our Sentence Stacking that the children so richly enjoyed last year.

The biggest change is through our foundation subjects where the children will be immersed into a variety of different learning opportunities. We will call this the Curriculum Enrichment Experience. In Year 5, our first Curriculum Enrichment is titled 'Time Travellers'. We will have four experience that will instil lasting memories in the children. The first is to design and build a time machine, then they will question a range of people from different generations to see how life, and we change, over time. After this, we have a best selling author to help the children with their adventure writing. Lastly, we would like the children to read poetry and stories to an audience of family and parents (date to be confirmed).

We will have six curriculum experience throughout the year which will involve visits. For example, we will be visiting the Space Museum in Leicester. So, I hope you will agree, exciting times.

There will be a cost to parents for the visits we have planned, and a letter will go out shortly to inform you of the trips and costs involved. I would like to say from the outset, that the school will be subsidising these trips from the Year 5 budget, and any outstanding contributions can be paid through instalments. If your child is Pupil Premium, then all of the cost will be met by the school.

 Lastly, our P.E. will be on a Tuesday and Thursday, but please leave kit at school encase of any other impromptu physical activity. Reading logs will be given out - if not already done so - and we would like all children to read to a family member for five minutes a day. Please sign the log so that your child gets their stamp.
