Our main reading lessons follow an approach called ‘Book Talk’. The children work in ability groups and each have access to a book or text which the whole group reads based on their needs. It follows the ideas that there are 3 main reasons to read: the FANTASTICS (also used in their writing lessons), COLOURFUL and REMINDERS. These follow a hierarchy of skills which help children to become well rounded readers who are able to answer a range of questions about what they read. All this is carried out in a talk based session so children can share and discuss their ideas about what they read without the pressure of a pen and paper.

We also follow the Accelerated Reader (AR) program, where children complete a quiz after they have read a book in their level range. This program allows the school to set half-termly individual targets for each child. Children work together as a class to try and all reach their targets with 2 classes being crowned ‘AR Champion’ per term – a great accolade! Each class also has their own rewards for gaining 100% on a quiz or reaching their AR target. Children also work to read as much as they can to have the great honour of becoming a “Word Millionaire” – it’s amazing how quickly some children can read 1,000,000 words!

Our reading areas allow children to relax and read at their leisure if they prefer this to playing outside. We regularly have new ‘Top 10’ books to help widen their reading range and have also introduced ‘Book Bingo’ where children have to read books by 12 different authors to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone occasionally. Children can also read the latest magazines and First News. Every classroom is stocked with real books that the children love to read from classic tales, to the latest authors to hit the shelves. Every term, the children visit the library to ensure that every child has a library card and therefore free access to not only books, but computer use and activity sessions.

Recently some of our children have begun to take part in PPR groups (Practically Perfect Readers!) which acts like a mini book club! This has given a chance for some children to extend their love of reading even further. They also have a key role in promoting reading across the school and having the important job of choosing future top 10 books.
