PSHE education is very important to us at HFJS. It is through this subject that the children are able to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and will help them prepare for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow up and in adulthood. By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, together we can tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of the all pupils.

To develop our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural education we will teach lessons based each term around a topic. Each session will enable the children to explore, investigate and philosophise about themes that affect us all. The topics for this year will be Celebrating Differences, Keeping Healthy, Relationships and Changing Me.

Celebrating Difference will explore the culturally diverse country and world that we live. It will allow the children to recognise their own identities and help them to celebrate not only their similarties to others but also the differences that make us who we are.

Keeping Healthy will allow the children to learn about creating and maintaining healthy bodies and healthy minds. The children will take part in work on healthy eating, keeping safe, wellbeing and mindfulness.

Our Relationships topic will explore the different relationships we have with different people; family, friends and peers. We will work on developing healthy relationships and friendships in other both in school and the wider community. This will also include some work on keeping safe in cyber space.

Changing Me is our Relationships and Sex topic. Here the children will learn about themselves, the differences between boys and girls, the physical and emotional changes they will experience as they grow into adults and how and why babies are made. Our aims for RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is to provide children with age appropriate information; to allow them to explore attitudes and values and to empower them to make positive decisions about their lives as they continue through school and into their future lives.
